Anyone who is going through a divorce has likely heard the term alimony. For people in Florida, the chance to learn about alimony recently came through a movie entitled “Divorce Corp.” that played in some cinemas.

The movie highlights some of the things that are hidden in the family court system. One of these things is alimony. Last year, alimony reform seemed like a sure thing. A bill that updated the alimony laws to do away with permanent alimony payments and place caps on alimony payments based on the length of the marriage and salary passed the House and the Senate. It eventually met its doom when Governor Rick Scott vetoed the bill. Had the bill been enacted, it would have been retroactive, so many people would have been affected by the law.

This movie is part of an effort to show the necessity of reform in the family law court. The president of Family Law Reform, a non-profit organization, says that people are getting hurt by the system. He says that reform is very necessary but that it will still be controversial.

So far, there isn’t a new bill filed to reform alimony. One lawmaker says he is working on the language for a new bill that will include smaller fixes for the current law. He says one thing he plans to include is a provision for retirees to stop paying alimony.

If you are facing a divorce that might include the need for alimony payments, you should make sure that you fully understand the law regarding this type of spousal support. An experienced Florida family law attorney may help you learn what you need to know.
