Teach your kids how to prioritize self-care

A divorce is hard on you and the children. During the process and in the period immediately after, your kids are going to look to you to see how they should react to this major life change. What you do can have a big impact on how they view the situation. One thing that you can do is to show them that no matter what is going on, self-care is a priority. This is a life skill that can benefit them throughout their life.

Try to make your home a positive place. If you are living in the marital home, this might mean making some changes to it and giving it a deep cleaning. Have your children help you to do this so that they feel like they are part of the process. Knowing that they had input into the environment can help them to adjust better, too.

You can also work toward living a healthy lifestyle. Get out and exercise, even if you are only going for walks. Eat a healthy diet. This teaches the kids how to properly care for themselves and gives your body what it needs to function properly. Have the kids go with you when you exercise, and you can use that time to bond with them.

When you are dealing with the stress of divorce, self-care can help you relax and adjust to the situation. This can make your home a better environment for the kids. Even when you are trying to work out the terms of the divorce and parenting plan with your ex, be sure to take steps to control your stress and remain positive.
