2 missing teens found, mother arrested

Child abductions are one of the scariest things that could possibly happen to a parent, but there are many situations in which one parent is actually the abductor. This is especially common in long, difficult custody cases or those that involve allegations of domestic violence or child abuse. In some cases, the abducting parent may feel like he or she has no other alternatives once the court makes a decision in the other parent’s favor, but taking matters into his or her own hands can cause legal repercussions later on.

One such case is getting national legal attention after two sisters were discovered to have been living on a horse ranch in Minnesota two years after they were reported missing. The teens, ages 16 and 17, had been missing since April 2013 after they reportedly ran away from home during the custody battle. The father was awarded full legal custody in November of the same year.

The courts ruled that the teens’ allegations that their father had been abusing them was untrue and the result of being “brainwashed” by the mother. The mother was arrested and charged in relation to the case.

These types of cases are never easy for any of the parties involved, and even the courts can have a difficult time determining which of the allegations — usually among many — are actually true. Whenever there are abuse accusations in a custody case, it is even more important for both parents to continue working the case through the proper legal channels. Even after a ruling has been made, there are almost always chances to appeal or additional filings that can be made to keep the case in legal play.
