Thinking about whether child support is going to the child or not

On Behalf of | Jul 14, 2017 | Child Support |

We recently discussed the fact that some parents are concerned about how child support payments are being used. If you recall, these payments can be used for anything that the child needs. This is true even if it is something like paying the mortgage that benefits other people.

Most parents only want to make sure that their children are properly cared for. Parents who are paying child support want to be sure that the money they are paying is helping their children and not being used to support their ex.

One thing that you have to remember when you are paying child support is that your ex won’t have to separate the child support money from his or her income. You should simply look at what your child has and how he or she is doing to determine if the money you pay is going to your child.

You can ask yourself the following questions:

  • Does your child have a home to live in?
  • Are the utilities on?
  • Does your child have clothing?
  • Is your child getting medical care?
  • Does your child have school supplies?
  • Is your child able to participate in extracurricular or fun activities?

If your answer to each of those is “yes,” it is pretty safe to assume that your ex is using child support appropriately. If the answer to those questions is “no,” you might need to determine if there is a situation that the court needs to look into.

We are here to help you with any matter related to child support. You just have to let us know what you need and we can let you know what options are available.
