Think carefully before you reply to messages about your children

The communication standards that you set for your relationship with your ex are something that is very important. When you have a child together, you need to have a sort of professional standard of communication. While this can be difficult if you are going through a contentious issue, you should try to keep things civil.

There are times when walking away from a message that your ex sends might be the best thing to do. You might need take a little time to think about what you are going to say when you reply. This is perfectly acceptable and often a better option than saying something you might regret later.

One of the things that is difficult when you are messaging your ex instead of speaking is that things can be misconstrued due to the lack of voice inflection. You have to be careful with how you write things in the message to try to avoid potential misunderstandings.

When you are messaging your ex, you also need to make sure that you are staying on topic. Try not to venture off from what you have to say about your children. Don’t bring up the past or discuss things that don’t have any bearing on the current situation.

If you do find that your message wasn’t taken as intended, you should address this in a nonconfrontational manner. This is why taking a step back from the situation before you make any replies.

Another thing to remember in these cases is that your messages are preserved. Only say things that you wouldn’t mind being said in court.
