What to know about social media during divorce

On Behalf of | Jun 28, 2024 | Divorce

Using your social media during divorce can impact you positively or negatively. Through social media platforms, you can find support groups that can benefit your mental well-being during divorce. However, your posts can also harm your case.

Here is what to know about social media during divorce:

Do not discuss your divorce

While you may want to use social media to express yourself or share your experience, this may not be the time to do so. Anything you post on social media can be used against you. Thus, avoid discussing the divorce or commenting on your spouse’s posts.

If your soon-to-be ex-spouse posts something regarding the divorce, whether it’s the truth or lies, do not defend yourself on social media. Doing this can negatively impact your interests.

Avoid posting photos when partying

Chances are your loved ones will come up with different ways to take your mind off the divorce. And one of them may be going out for drinks. If you do this and take pictures, don’t post them. Ensure everyone is aware of this.

Photos of you at a bar drinking when you should have been at work or posts that suggest you frequently party can be used when determining child custody if you and your spouse have a kid(s).

Avoid sharing your location

Adding a location to social media posts is not uncommon. However, you should avoid doing this, especially when going through a highly contested divorce or if your spouse has threatened you with violence or was violent in your marriage.

It can be beneficial to deactivate your social media accounts during divorce if possible. Otherwise, be extra careful about how you use the platforms. You should also seek legal help to make informed decisions.
