What are the types of alimony in Florida?

On Behalf of | Apr 21, 2025 | Alimony

Alimony helps support a lower-earning spouse after divorce, but not all alimony works the same way. In Florida, courts award different types of alimony based on your situation. Understanding the differences helps you plan ahead.

Bridge-the-gap alimony offers short-term help

Bridge-the-gap alimony helps you transition from being married to being single. It covers short-term needs like rent, bills, or buying a car. This type lasts no more than two years and ends if either spouse dies or if the receiving spouse remarries. Once the court sets this type of alimony, it stays fixed.

Rehabilitative alimony supports future earning

If you need time to get education or training to become self-sufficient, rehabilitative alimony may apply. You must present a clear plan that shows how you’ll reach that goal. Payments last as long as it takes to complete the plan. The court can change or end this alimony if circumstances change or you don’t follow the plan.

Durational alimony lasts for a set period

Durational alimony supports you for a specific number of years, depending on how long your marriage lasted. For example, a 10-year marriage might lead to 5 years of durational alimony. The court may adjust the amount later, but usually won’t change the length unless you show a major change.

Permanent alimony is now rare

Florida law changed in 2023. Courts no longer award permanent alimony. Instead, they focus on helping you become self-supporting. In rare cases, a judge might order longer support if other options don’t meet your needs.

Know what fits your situation

Each alimony type serves a different purpose. The court looks at your marriage length, income, age, health, and future prospects. When you understand the types of alimony, you’ll feel more prepared for what’s possible.
